Medical technician receives Fisher House award

A medical technician with the 59th Surgical Specialties Squadron at San Antonio Military Medical Center-South, or Wilford Hall Medical Center, received a prestigious award Nov. 2 for his contribution to the medical mission during his deployment to Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

Senior Airman Zavier Grier was one of three Fisher House program annual award recipients. The awards recognize individuals who have devoted time and energy to helping others. Nominees are selected by members of the Fisher House program board of directors and are chosen from Lackland Air Force Base or around the San Antonio community.

"It was an honor. I didn't know how big of a deal it was going to be," said Airman Grier.

The awards were presented by retired Col. Jerry Hardy, Fisher House Board of Directors president, and retired Chief Master Sgt. Dwayne F. Hopkins, Fisher House executive director, at the annual Fisher House Gala.

Airman Grier was deployed to Iraq from September 2007 to January 2008. During his deployment, he mastered critical care skills and treated more than 400 critically injured patients. He also prepared critically ill patients for short-notice critical care air transport team evacuations.

"I had never worked in the intensive care unit before my deployment. Everyone was really helpful and I learned a lot of new things, quickly," said Airman Grier.
